For instance, a category 5 hurricane can provide airfoil uplifting forces of 100 pounds/square foot on an improperly designed roof, which is enough to lift an entire wooden house off its foundation.
The photos above are typical of houses being lifted from their foundations and then disintegrated into small pieces. Typical wood construction homes weigh less than 200,000 pounds and have roofs that are approximately 3,000 to 5,000 square feet in area (30 to 40 ‘squares’). A Category 5 hurricane with 175 mph winds producing uplifting forces of 100 pounds/square foot would yield 400,000 pounds of uplifting force (almost twice what an entire wood construction house weighs) easily lifting the average 4,000 square foot roof, and the attached home. Our concrete design would weigh well in excess of a million pounds and have essentially flat roofs designed to eliminate the airfoil up lift effect experienced with gable and other roofs, while providing drainage for water weight. ![]()
