Earthquake DamageWe are currently working on the use of lead-rubber isolation bearings, hollow rectangular columns with vertical, longitudinal, transverse, spiral, and diagonal steel reinforcement to improve the earthquake resistance of this type of construction. See figure below of a footing and column joint:
The above figures show the lead-rubber isolation bearings that have been so successful in reducing earthquake damage. Incorporating these into our design would greatly reduce earthquake damage. The properties of the lead core are high initial shear strength of 130 MPa, which is equivalent to about 19,000 psi concrete; and low plastic shear strength of 10 MPa or 1,500 psi concrete. ![]()
